Third Chakra Deficiency

Posted By Becky Cochran on September 6, 2009

Your third chakra is located in the solar plexus, halfway between the navel and the ribcage. This chakra houses self-direction, personal will-power, intention, physical energy, personal boundaries, protection, and self-control. This chakra, when healthy defines your self-esteem. It is your center of personal power. In the color spectrum, the third chakra vibrates energetically to the color yellow, like a solar disc.

The third chakra influences your objective mind, your intellect, and reason. When healthy it gives you the ability to be mentally clear and make effective decisions concerning your direction in life. The third chakra gives you courage to stick up for yourself, say “no” to the things that don’t serve you, to put up healthy personal boundaries, and remain strong in the face of challenge. When the third chakra is open and healthy you recognize what is important and meaningful in life and you make healthy choices without compromise or fear.

On a physiological level, the third chakra governs the stomach, pancreas, adrenals, upper intestines, gallbladder, and liver as well as the lower back located behind the solar plexus. When your third chakra is deficient you may likely experience problems in these areas of your body.

Your third chakra carries the beliefs you hold about yourself and about the world. Depending upon how open and healthy it is it will reflect such self-defining statements as, “I’m powerful,” “I’m afraid,” “I’m willing,” “I’m unworthy,” “I’m creative and worthwhile.” A person with a weak or deficient third chakra will avoid making decisions look to others to make their decisions, blame others when those decisions do not bring satisfaction, and generally feel worthless.

Third Chakra Deficiency

Your third chakra reflects a deficiency if you allow others to push you around or bully you. Any time you turn your personal power over to others, whether parents, as an adult, partners, bosses, neighbors, or stay in a situation that you know isn’t good for you, it is a clear sign that this chakra is in need of attention.

You may wonder, “How did I lose my power?” It may be that you were forced to submit to oppressive elders when you were young, or were never truly respected at home. This is the basis of patriarchy and an unhealthy system to which most of you are accustomed. Of course it is both loving and necessary when you are infants and toddlers, innocent about the dangers of the world to be guided and contained, but as you age, and develop your reason and judgment it is natural to be and your spiritual right to be given more personal authority to direct your life. It is when you are made to submit to others for their own sake, and not for any sensible reason that your third chakra deflates.

A weak third chakra wreaks havoc on your life. It causes you to be passive-aggressive, co-dependent (pleasing others more than pleasing yourself), depressed, addicted to substances, and emotionally enraged. It also takes its toll on your physical health. It can result in digestive problems, ulcers, irritable colon, gall bladder problems, excessive weight around the middle, and loss of appetite.

Restoring Your Power with Assistance from Others

If your third chakra is weak, it helps in healing this energy center to seek the support and help of others. This can be found in the form of a therapist, energetic body-worker, or attending workshops to expand your awareness, as well as twelve step programs on co-dependency which are everywhere and free. You can also seek the counsel of an individual therapist, although I have found group therapy is best, so you can practice setting boundaries with others in a safe place.

Strengthen Your Power

A great way to energize the third chakra is to laugh, especially at things that you fear, that are oppress or intimidate you. See the humor in life. Develop a sense of humor. Read funny books. See funny movies. Go the comedy clubs. Watch the comedy channel on HBO. You cannot be controlled by what you laugh at, ever. One of my mother’s favorite sayings is, “The situation is critical, but not serious.” In other words, any intimidating situation becomes more manageable with a dose of humor.
